The New and Improving Children’s Ministry at the
Church of the Transfiguration

The children gather with Father David at the Chancel Step to re-tell the Christmas story on Christmas Eve.
‘Sunday School’ is a use of vocabulary, which stems from a time when the understanding of ‘Children’s Ministry,’ was that the community should be teaching the children, what and how to believe. We, at the Church of the Transfiguration, hope to embark on a new kind of Children’s Ministry in 2011, one with a more appropriate vocabulary for what we truly believe.
‘Children’s Ministry’ is not just the ministering of the adults to the children of the community, but both the ministering of the children to the adults of the community and the adults to the children. Rather than simply ‘teaching’ the children of the congregation, we engage in ministry with them. They are valued and complete members of our church, with a lot to say, and a ton to offer.
Through our revitalized Children’s Ministry programme, we offer the youngest generation of our church, not only the opportunity to learn the stories of scripture, and the teachings of Christianity, but we offer the opportunity for each one of us, to live the stories of scripture together through the eyes of a child again. The youngest learning from the eldest, and the eldest learning from the youngest – for if we listen to Christ – we have much to learn from the children in our midst.
For Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not keep them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
Children’s Ministry is held every Sunday (September – June) in the Max Ross Fellowship room.
Parents with young children are invited to drop off their children in the Max Ross Fellowship room before the service. During their time together, the children get to participate in fun, age-appropriate activities based on the same scripture passages and themes that the adults are engaging with in the sanctuary, as together we explore the seasons of the church calendar. The kids will return to the sanctuary to participate in the passing of the peace and Communion with the whole church family.

Make sure you take a moment to visit Father David's Blog. Each week will contain either a portion of his weekly Sermon, or a reflection on current events in both the church and the world.
